Thoracic Spine: Diagnoses and Locations Glossary

This article serves as a glossary of the diagnoses and location details currently available in the DataBiologics platform. It is designed as a quick reference for members to easily review the standardized terms used across the system.

  • Disc annular Tear: a rupture or break in the outer fibrous ring (annulus fibrosus) of an intervertebral disc.

  • Disc Degeneration: a condition where the intervertebral discs in the spine deteriorate over time.

  • Disc Herniation: occurs when part of the soft, jelly-like center of an intervertebral disc (nucleus pulposus) pushes through the tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus) of the disc and presses on nearby nerves or the spinal cord.

  • Facet Joint Hypermobility: a condition in which the facet joints in the spine have an excessive range of motion, leading to instability and pain.

                                       -T2-3 Joint (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T3-4 Joint (left/right/bilateral)

  • Facet Joint OA: a degenerative condition that affects the small joints (facet joints) in the spine.

                                       -T2-3 Joint (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T3-4 Joint (left/right/bilateral)

  • General Pain: select this if diagnosis is unspecified. 
  • Ligament Sprain/Tear: an injury that occurs when a ligament is stretched or torn. 
    Locations available: -Interspinous Ligament 
                                       -Supraspinous Ligament 
  • Muscle Strain: an injury that occurs when muscles are overstretched or torn.
    Locations available: None 
  • Nerve Injury/Neuropathy: injury or damage to the nerves. 
    Locations available: -Cutaneous Branches of Dorsal Rami Nerve (left/right/bilateral)
    Other terminology might include: 

    neuropraxia, nerve entrapment, thoracic outlet syndrome, brachial plexus injury, long thoracic nerve palsy, dorsal scapular nerve neuropathy

  • Radiculopathy: a condition where a nerve root is compressed or irritated, causing pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness.
    Locations available: -T1 Nerve (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T2 Nerve (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T3 Nerve (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T4 Nerve (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T5 Nerve (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T6 Nerve (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T7 Nerve (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T8 Nerve (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T9 Nerve (left/right/bilateral) 
                                       -T10 Nerve (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T11 Nerve (left/right/bilateral)
                                       -T12 Nerve (left/right/bilateral) 
    Other terminology might include: pinched nerve
  • Stenosis: a narrowing of the spinal canal.

                                       -T4-5 Joint (left/right/bilateral)
