Knee: Diagnoses and Locations Glossary

This article serves as a glossary of the diagnoses and location details currently available in the DataBiologics platform. It is designed as a quick reference for members to easily review the standardized terms used across the system.

Diagnoses Available: 

  • Bone Marrow Lesion: an abnormal area of bone marrow. 
    Locations available: -Lateral Femoral Condyle
                                       -Medial Femoral Condyle
                                       -Lateral Tibial Condyle
                                       -Medial Tibial Condyle
                                       -Patella
  • Bursitis: a condition that causes inflammation of the bursae.
    Other terminology might include: prepatellar bursitis (Housemaid’s knee), infrapatellar bursitis (Jumper’s knee), pes anserine bursitis 
  • Calcific Tendonopathy: a condition where calcium deposits form in the tendons. 
    Other terminology might include: calcific tendinitis of patella, quadriceps, MCL, biceps femoris, pellegrini-stieda disease, Housemaid’s knee
  • Chondrocalcinosis: a condition characterized by the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystals in the cartilage of joints.
    Other terminology might include: CPPD, pseudogout 
  • Chondrommalacia: common condition causing pain in the kneecap. 
    Other terminology might include: Runner’s knee
  • Effusion:  an abnormal accumulation of fluid in a body cavity or space. 
  • Focal Cartilage Defect: a localized area of damage to the articular cartilage. 
    Locations available: -Lateral Femoral Condyle
                                       -Medial Femoral Condyle
                                       - Patellar
                                       -Tibial
                                       -Trochlear
    Other terminology might include: chondral defect, osteochondral defect, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), articular cartilage defect 
  • General Pain: use if diagnosis is unspecified. 
  • Ligament Sprain: an injury that occurs when a ligament is stretched or torn
    Locations available: -Anterior Cruciate (ACL) 
                                       -Medial Collateral (MCL) 
                                       -Lateral Collateral (LCL) 
                                       -Posterior Cruciate (PCL) 
  • Meniscus Tear (acute/chronic): an injury to the meniscus, the crescent-shaped cartilage pads in the knee joint. 
    Locations available: -Medial Meniscus
                                       -Lateral Meniscus
    Types of tears: radial, longitudinal, bucket handle, flap, complex tear
  • Muscle Strain and MuscleTear: an injury that occurs when a muscle is stretched or torn.
    Locations available: -Biceps Femoris Muscle
                                      -Gastrocnemius Muscle
                                      -Gracilis Muscle
                                      -Patellar Muscle
                                      -Quadriceps Muscle
                                      -Sartorius Muscle
                                      -Semimembranosus Muscle
                                      -Semitendinosus Muscle
                                      -Soleus Muscle
  • Nerve injury/neuropathy: damage to the nerves.
    Locations available: -Common Fibular Nerve (CFN)
                                       -Common Peroneal Nerve
                                       -Deep Peroneal Nerve 
                                       -Inferior Lateral Genicular Nerve
                                       -Inferomedial Genicular Nerve 
                                       -Nerve to Vastus Intermedius (NVI)
                                       -Nerve to Vastus Lateralis (NVL)
                                       -Nerve to Vastus Medialis (NVM)
                                       -Patellofemoral Genicular Nerve (PFGN)
                                       -Recurrent Fibular Nerve
  • Osteoarthritis (OA): arthritis in the joints. 
    Locations available: -Lateral Tibiofemoral Joint
                                       -Medial Tibiofemoral Joint
                                       -Patellofemoral Joint
  • Osteophytes: bony growths that form along the edges of bones, typically in joints. 
    Other terminology might include: bone spurs 
  • Plica Syndrome: a condition that causes pain in the knee. 
    Locations available: -Infrapatellar Plicae
                                       -Lateral Plicae
                                       -Medial Plicae
                                       -Suprapatellar Plicae
  • Synovitis: an inflammation of the synovium, the lining of the joints.
    Other terminology might include: RA, Gout, pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), post-traumatic synovitis  
  • Tendinosis: a degenerative condition that affects the tendons.
    Locations available: -Biceps Femoris Tendon
                                      -Gastrocnemius Tendon
                                      -Gracilis Tendon
                                      -Patellar Tendon
                                      -Quadriceps Tendon
                                      -Sartorius Tendon
                                      -Semimembranosus Tendon
                                      -Semitendinosus Tendon
                                      -Soleus Tendon
    Other terminology might include: patellar tendinosis (jumper’s knee), quadriceps tendinopathy, popliteus tendonitis, Pes Anserinus Tendinopathy, Iliotibial Band Syndrome, Osgood-Schlatter Disease 
  • Tendon Tear (full/partial thickness and unspecified): an injury that occurs when a tendon becomes overstretched or ruptured. 
    Locations available: -Biceps Femoris Tendon
                                      -Gastrocnemius Tendon
                                      -Gracilis Tendon
                                      -Patellar Tendon
                                      -Quadriceps Tendon
                                      -Sartorius Tendon
                                      -Semimembranosus Tendon
                                      -Semitendinosus Tendon
                                      -Soleus Tendon
