Ankle: Diagnoses and Locations Glossary

This article serves as a glossary of the diagnoses and location details currently available in the DataBiologics platform. It is designed as a quick reference for members to easily review the standardized terms used across the system.

Diagnoses Available: 

  • Bone Marrow Lesion: an abnormal area of bone marrow. 
    Locations available: -Calcaneus 
                                       -Subtalar Joint 
                                       -Talus 
                                       -Tibia 
  • Bursitis: a condition that causes inflammation of the bursae.
    Other terminology might include: 

    retrocalcaneal bursitis, subcutaneous calcaneal bursa, subcutaneous bursa of the medial malleolus 

  • Effusion:  an abnormal accumulation of fluid in a body cavity or space. 
    Locations available: -Subtalar Joint
                                       -Tibiofibular Joint
                                       -Tibiotalar Joint
  • Focal Cartilage Defect: a localized area of damage to the articular cartilage. 
    Locations available: -Talus
    Other terminology might include: 

    osteochondral lesion of the talus (OLT), osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), osteochondral lesions (OCL)

  • General Pain: use if diagnosis is unspecified. 
  • Ligament Sprain: an injury that occurs when a ligament is stretched or torn
    Locations available: -Anterior Inferior Tibiofibular Ligament
                                       -Anterior Talofibular Ligament
                                       -Calcaneofibular Ligament 
                                       -Deltoid Ligament 
                                       -Posterior Talofibular Ligament  
  • Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome: an overuse injury that causes pain along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia). 
    Locations available: -Tibia 
    Other terminology might include: shin splints
  • Muscle Strain and Muscle Tear: an injury that occurs when a muscle is stretched or torn.
    Locations available: -Extensor Hallucis Longus Muscle
                                      -Gastrocnemius Muscle
                                      -Soleus Muscle
                                      -Peroneus Muscle 
                                      -Tibialis Anterior Muscle                 
  • Nerve injury/neuropathy: damage to the nerves.
    Locations available: -Peroneal Nerve
                                       -Sural Nerve
                                       -Tibial Nerve 
    Other terminology might include: 

    tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS), Baxter’s nerve, Morton’s neuroma

  • Osteoarthritis (OA): arthritis in the joints. 
    Locations available: -Subtalar Joint
                                       -Tibiofibular Joint
                                       -Tibiotalar Joint
    Other terminology might include: Degenerative joint disease (DJD)
  • Synovitis: an inflammation of the synovium, the lining of the joints.
    Locations available: -Subtalar Joint
                                       -Tibiofibular Joint
                                       -Tibiotalar Joint 
  • Tendinosis: a degenerative condition that affects the tendons.
    Locations available: -Extensor Digitorum Longus Tendon
                                       -Extensor Hallucis Longus Tendon
                                       -Flexor Digitorum Longus Tendon
                                       -Flexor Hallucis Longus Tendon
                                       -Peroneal Brevis Tendon
                                       -Peroneal Longus Tendon
                                       -Plantaris Tendon
                                       -Soleus Tendon
                                       -Tibialis Anterior Tendon
                                       -Tibialis Posterior Tendon
  • Tendon Tear (full/partial thickness and unspecified): an injury that occurs when a tendon becomes overstretched or ruptured. 
    Locations available: -Extensor Digitorum Longus Tendon
                                       -Extensor Hallucis Longus Tendon
                                       -Flexor Digitorum Longus Tendon
                                       -Flexor Hallucis Longus Tendon
                                       -Peroneal Brevis Tendon
                                       -Peroneal Longus Tendon
                                       -Plantaris Tendon
                                       -Soleus Tendon
                                       -Tibialis Anterior Tendon
                                       -Tibialis Posterior Tendon
